Helen K. Hylland's Obituary
Helen K. Hylland, age 99, passed away on March 11, 2019. She was born on April 28, 1919 to George and Wilhelmina (Bittner) Pekelder in Muskegon. Helen graduated from Muskegon High School and Muskegon Community College and was a life long resident of the Muskegon area. Throughout her life she was active in the community. She headed the Service League, helped run the Nearly New Store, was in Town Club and was on the board of the Hume Home. She will also be remembered as a great homemaker, cook, pianist, bridge player and writer. She also loved golf and played for many years at the White Lake Golf Club. On February 22, 1941, Helen married Donn C. Hylland and they remained together until his death on August 11, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Christine (Hylland) Harmer; and sister, Dorothy Bingham. Helen is survived by two children, Thomas D. (Janice) Hylland of Muskegon and Robert G. (Jane) Hylland of Whitehall; granddaughter, Annie E. Wierengo, who loved her like a mother; six other beloved grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Georgia Mae (Bob) Tuxbury. Following her wishes, cremation has taken place. A private memorial with family only will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the staff at both American House (Oakcrest) and Heartwood Lodge for their care and support for Helen in her latter years. Arrangements have been entrusted to The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey Street, Norton Shores, 231-798-1100.
