Mrs. Helen Ruth Nelson's Obituary
Mrs. Helen Ruth Nelson, age 87, went to be with her Lord Tuesday, September 16, 2014. She was born in Holland, MI on May 6, 1927 to William and Cornelia (Wentzel) Mulder and had lived in Muskegon since 1950. Mrs. Nelson had a servant’s heart, and through her mission of nursing, she was able to touch many lives locally and throughout the world. She worked as registered nurse at Holland Hospital, Hackley Hospital and for Medical Personnel Pool. She also worked in administration for the Red Cross and taught at Hackley School of Nursing. Her missions with Medical Ministry International took her on 12 trips to some of the poorest countries in the world. She volunteered at The Muskegon Rescue Mission, International Aid and Love, Inc. Helen felt her mission in life was “to serve God and humanity” and to “show the love of Christ”. She was a member of Calvin Christian Reformed Church where she was active with Bible Study and served as a deacon and elder. On August 5, 1950, Helen married R. Robert Nelson in Holland and he preceded her in death on October 4, 1988. She is survived by four children, Ralph Nelson of Oceanside, CA, Stephen (Kathleen) Nelson of Grand Rapids, Sara (Wayne) Criger of St. Paul, MN and Rebecca (Joseph) Starck of Lakewood, OH; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Paul (Ann) Mulder of Holland, John (Eleanor) Mulder of Northville and Roger (Beverly) Mulder of Holland; one sister, Dorothy Plasman of Holland and several loving nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, R. Robert Nelson, Helen was preceded in death by one daughter, Lieschen Stevens; her parents; one brother, William Mulder and two sisters, Charlotte Mulder and Lucille Dozeman. SERVICES will be 11:00 AM Friday, September 19, 2014 at Calvin Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Dan Plasman officiating. VISITATION will be from 2-4 & 6-8 PM Thursday, September 18, 2014 at The Walburn Chapel, 1547 W. Sherman Blvd., 231-759-8565. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. MEMORIALS in Helen’s name may be made to Medical Ministry International or Harbor Hospice – Poppen Residence.
