Helen Joan Van Oordt's Obituary
Helen Joan (Rose) Van Oordt, age 89, of Grand Haven passed away Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Grand Pines Assisted Living. She was born December 31, 1923, in Grand Haven to Myron Edgar and Alice (VanZanten) Rose. She married Allen Van Oordt, Jr. on June 21, 1944 at First Reformed Church in Grand Haven.
Helen was a lifelong resident of Grand Haven. She was employed as an engineering secretary at Challenge Machinery for 15 years. She was a member of Hope Reformed Church and the Lady’s Aid, the American Legion Post #28 Auxiliary, “Classy Red Hattitude” Red Hat Society and helped on the Coast Guard Pageant Committee. She enjoyed making knit caps, and matching hats & mittens for Goodfellows. She wintered in Spring Hill, Florida with her husband Allen, where she also crocheted hats for the neo-natal unit and made quilts for many family members. Helen loved spending time with her family, and always looked forward to her Sunday afternoon coffee hour with her daughters at Coffee Grounds.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Allen; children: Pat (Jim) Best of Nunica, Linda (Jared, Jr.) Gieske of Fruitport, Jim (Kim) Van Oordt, of Fruitport, and Joyce (Dann) Yonker of Spring Lake; 7 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brother, Paul (Bea) Rose of Grand Haven. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alice and Myron Rose; 2 brothers, Howard Rose and Robert Rose, 4 sisters-in-law and 1 brother-in-law.
Funeral services for Helen will be 11:00 AM Monday, February 4, 2013 at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven with Rev. Tim Taylor officiating. Visitation with the family will be 2-4 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Interment will take place in Spring Lake Township Cemetery.
