Helen was the most generous person I have ever known, especially with herself. She invested time and effort into all of her relationships, and everyone who knew her is better off for doing so. I met Helen while she was pregnant with Michael, although we did not become close until he was actually a toddler. She listened to my problems and empathized with me, but never gave unwanted advice. She helped me learn to believe in myself again, to make time for myself and my needs. Helen was so creative in parenting that she inspired me to try different things, too. I've never met anyone who enjoyed her kids as much as she did.
Helen loved to do "artsy-craftsy" things, and I got to witness many of them. What stands out most in my memory is the Piggy-quilt she made for her mom.
Once every week, my daughter and I would be invited over to Helen's for "family night", where she and I would gab and gab, the kids would play, and we would stay for supper and hours of fun. She thought the family scene would be good for my daughter and myself, since we were "just two" in number. How right she was!
Although we have not been close for many years, the time we did have together means so much to me, I don't have the words to express. I always knew that she was there, waiting if I needed a listener or an uplifting lecture. I miss her so much already, but because we believe in the same God, I know she will be one of the first people I see when I get to heaven.
