Hendrik "Henry" Harjer's Obituary
Hendrik “Henry” Harjer, age 93, of Crockery Township passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at home. His adamant wish for finally being with Evelyn his wife of 54 years has finally come true. He was born March 2, 1916, to Ben John and Henrietta (VanZuthem) Harjer in Muskegon, and he married Evelyn N. Chittenden on February 13, 1943 in Muskegon. She preceded him in death on November 20, 1997.
Henry owned and operated Daily Cleaners in Muskegon since 1958. He served his country in the Army during World War II. He built his home on Leonard St. in 1958 and very much enjoyed being there and working on his garden. His favorite times were spent with his family and friends.
Survivors include his two sons, Douglas L. (Chris) Harjer of Grand Haven and Dennis J. Harjer of Spring Lake; 4 grandchildren: Jonah of Truckee, CA; Holle of Boulder, CO, and Jennifer of Portland, OR and Kristin of East Lansing, MI; 3 sisters JoAnn Paul, Henrietta Bell, and Peggy (Bob) Forrest, all of Muskegon; five brothers: Fred of Muskegon, Mike (Hazel) of Muskegon, Ben John (Gloria) of Muskegon, Harold (Doris) of Wilcox, AZ, and Everett “Buck” (Dorothy) Harjer of Tucson, AZ; also several nieces and nephews and special friends. He was preceded in death by 1 sister, Fanny Handlogten, and 3 brothers, Walter, Herman, and Jerry.
The service for Henry will be held Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. from the VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Chapel in Grand Haven with Rev. J. Robert Kleinheksel officiating. Friends may meet the family on Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the Grand Haven funeral home. Interment will be at Spring Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Ottawa Community.
