Mr Herbert Donald Smith's Obituary
Herbert Donald Smith, age 92, passed away on October 21, 2013 following an accident. Herb was born on September 30, 1921 to William and Hazel Smith. Herb was married twice in his life: first to Grace(Gillette) Smith, then to Patricia (Purdy-Ackley) Smith. He loved both of them dearly, and both of them preceded him in death. He was also blessed with 5 children. Herb worked for Construction Aggregate for over 20 years as a foreman before retiring in the mid 1980’s. He was also a Marine and WWII Veteran and very proud of it. He was a member of Don Rae VFW Post 8846, and the Eagles of White Cloud. He was avid outdoors man, and enjoyed golfing. Herb was an active individual who always spoke his mind however, deep down, a soft hearted, strong-willed, compassionate person who will be deeply missed. SURVIVORS include 4 children, Carol (Gary) Jolman, Sandy (Dave) Hutson, Duane (Karen) Smith, and Janet DeMarr; daughter-in-law, Paula Smith; 5 step children; 15 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; many step grandchildren & great grandchildren; 1 brother, Kenneth (Nicki) Smith; 1 sister, Bonnie Bell; several nieces and nephews; and his special friend, Judy Ranger. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by his son, Douglas Smith; both parents; 7 brothers; and 3 sisters. SERVICES will be held on October 28th, 2013 at 11 am at the Don Rae VFW #8846; Luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please make donations either to the Don Rea Post or to the Muskegon Veterans' Center.
