Herbert E. Devenport's Obituary
Mr. Herbert E. Devenport, age 95, died Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at the Poppen House. He was born October 19, 1911 in Muskegon Heights to George and Hazel (Fisher) Devenport, and had resided in the area his entire life. Mr. Devenport was a Veteran of the US Army, having served in WWII. In 1974, he retired from the Muskegon Heights Water Department after 33 years as a pump operator, and had previously worked as a police officer for Muskegon Heights in the early 1940’s. Mr. Devenport enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping and walking in the woods. On October 9, 1937, he married the former Edna VanPelt in Crown Point, IN and she preceded him in death on February 12, 1995 after 57 years of marriage. SURVIVORS include 2 children, Edmond R. (Norva) Devenport, and Sandy K. (Ken) Ingersoll both of Muskegon; 5 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; and several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Mr. Devenport was also preceded in death by 1 sister, Edie Walker. SERVICES will be 1PM Friday at The Lee Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc., 6291 S. Harvey St. 231-798-1100 with Rev. John H. Brown officiating. VISITATION with the family will be 6-8 PM Thursday (this evening). Burial will take place at Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Memorial Contributions to the Harbor Hospice Poppen House would be appreciated.
