Mr. Homer Ray Hoagland Sr.'s Obituary
Homer Ray Hoagland, age 85, passed away at Sunday morning, July 1, 2012, at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. Homer was born August 14, 1926 in North Manchester, IN to Roy and Marie (Baker) Hoagland. Homer served his country is the U.S. Army. On December 24, 1946, he married the former Sylvia Grace McCarry in Beulah, MI. Sylvia preceded Homer in death on November 10, 2011. Homer had been an owner / operator truck driver for many years prior to his retirement. He worked with Mayflower and Perkins Lines, and prior to that, he had worked at American Store Equipment as a journeyman carpenter. He helped countless neighbors and friends with woodworking projects throughout the years. He also enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family. Homer is survived by his daughter, Sylvia VanderVelde; 4 sons, Homer R. (Geraldine)Hoagland, Marvin (Carmen) Hoagland , Garry (Cindy) Hoagland, and Bob Hoagland; 15 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Verl (Virginia) Hoagland and Jake “JR” Hoagland; 2 sisters, Eunice “Evon” Czapansky and “Addie” Swanson; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Sylvia, Homer was preceded in death by his son-in-law Art VanderVelde; great granddaughter, Emily Jayne Vander Velde; his parents, and 3 brothers, Robert, Orville, and Irvin.
