Hugh Hornstein's Obituary
Hugh Alcott Hornstein, age 88, passed away July 24,2025. He was born in Chicago on July 18, 1937, to Shirley (Alcott) and Harris Hornstein. Hugh moved to Michigan as a child and grew up in Manistee, MI. He was the only son of Shirley and Harris.
Hugh was a graduate of Western Michigan University and had a long career in education teaching at Athens School District, Harper Creek School District, Spring Field School District and 30+ years at Muskegon Community College, where he taught History, Geography and Sociology. He was the proud author of The Haywire: A Brief History of the Manistique and Lake Superior Railroad.
He is survived in death by his loving and devoted wife, Barbara; daughters, Theresa Hornstein, Anita (Michael) Mann; and 6 grandchildren, Katrina Hornstein, Elyse Hornstein, Nikoli (Melissa) Wiens, Monika (Shawn) Miller, Kristina Mann and Sophia Mann.
Hugh will be remembered for his love of history, books, lake freighters, railroads and The Green Bay Packers.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, feel free to donate in remembrance of Hugh, to a charity of your choice.
