Irene Maas' Obituary
Mrs. Irene Maas, age 90, of Grand Haven passed away Thursday, June 24, 2021, at Heartwood Lodge. She was born October 26, 1930, in Grand Haven to Ludwig and Ruth (Johnson) Vollmer. On February 14, 1953, she married Anthony Maas in Holland and he preceded her in death on October 25, 2016.
Irene attended Robinson School, Grand Haven High School and graduated from Holland High School, she earned an associate degree from Hope College in education. She worked as a substitute teacher at Robinson School. While her husband Anthony was in the Army, she traveled with him and lived in the Netherlands and Germany. Irene worked at Jobbers Outlet, Mary Jane Café in Holland where she met Tony, Michigan Bell Telephone Company, Behms Blueberry Farm and their family Christmas Tree farm. She was a girl scout leader and a catechism teacher at St. Patrick – St. Anthony Catholic Church. Her interests were gardening, canning, foraging, flower arranging, bird watching, refinishing old furniture, and enjoyed Tiger baseball.
She is survived by two loving daughters, Yvonne (David) Boon and Anita Maas of Grand Haven; five grandchildren: Cecilia Potts, Arie (Caitlin) Boon, Anthony (Elizabeth) Boon, Alida (Andrew) Semrinec, and Timothy (Rachel) Andrews; three great-grandchildren, Tristan Andrews and Thomas and David Boon. She is also survived by two sisters, Ruth (Paul) Smeenge, Elizabeth (Jim) Walwood; two brothers, Stuart Vollmer, Raymond (Nancy) Vollmer; sister-in-law, Dina Vollmer; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Ludwig Jr, (Lenore) Vollmer, and George Vollmer; sister, Ida Belle (Donald) Currie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at St. Patrick – St. Anthony Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Schwartz officiating. Visitation will take place 5-7 PM Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at The VanZantwick Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 620 Washington Ave, Grand Haven, MI 49417. Interment will take place in Lakeshore Cemetery. Memorial contributions in memory of Irene may be given to Love in Action or the American Cancer Society.
