Iris L. Poort's Obituary
Iris L. Poort, age 91, passed away Saturday, May 20, 2023. She was born on August 5, 1931 in Hart, MI to Burnice and Mary (Arnouts) Leak and resided most of her life in Muskegon. Iris worked at Sears Roebuck as a manager for 38 years before retiring 1999. She loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. Iris enjoyed playing cards with her group of friends and family. She was a talented artist with both water color painting and sketching, and loved feeding the squirrels and birds on her back deck. Iris enjoyed spending time on the water at Campbell Lake and Long Lake, along with camping with friends. On September 9, 1950, she married Clement “Clem” Poort, and he preceded her in death on April 18, 2016. SURVIVORS include 5 daughters, Linda (Stephen) Thaler, Jan Poort, Lori (Marvin) Hughey, Joyce (Dan) Emory and Julie (Brian) Rakowski; nine grandchildren, Scott (Sarah) Thaler, Lisa (Josh) Russ, Cindy (Ben) Bosse, Caitlin Hughey, Evan Emory, Brandi (Eddie) Emory, Amanda Emory, Devin Rakowski, Nikole “Niki” Rakowski; seven great grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Madeline “Babs” Leak and many nieces and nephews. Iris was also preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Dale Leak and Donald Leak. MEMORIAL SERVICES will be 12pm Thursday, May 25, 2023 at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 S. Harvey St. Norton Shores, MI 49444 (231) 798-1100. VISITATION with the family will be 1 hour prior to the service, from 11am-12pm. Memorial Contributions to both Harbor Hospice and the Alzheimer’s Association in Iris’ name will be appreciated.
