J. Peter Smith's Obituary
Mr. J. Peter Smith, age 76, of Grand Haven passed away Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Grand Pines Assisted Living. He was born on July 3, 1938 to John Henry Smith, Jr. and Marion Blakeslee Smith.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Laurie (Jeff) Kelley of Grand Haven and Mary Anne (Doug) Newman of Cincinnati, OH; 5 grandchildren, Katy, Lainey, Ella, Jonathan and Matthew; brother, Thomas W. Smith of Grosse Pointe Park, MI; 2 step-children, Jill Morketter and Scott Morketter; along with 4 nieces and many cousins. Peter was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Lee Smith on February 14, 2011.
Peter was a Vice President of Trust at National Bank of Detroit and then JP Morgan Chase Bank, before retiring in 2002. He was a 1956 graduate of Grosse Pointe High School, and 1960 graduated of Centre College in Danville, KY. Peter was a member of St. Patrick-St. Anthony Catholic Church in Grand Haven, and enjoyed golf and tennis. He also volunteered at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, MI. Peter loved his summers in Grand Haven, especially all of his family and friends in Highland Park.
A funeral service for Peter will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home, 620 Washington Ave., Grand Haven, MI 49417 with Rev. Fr. William Langlois officiating. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service, from 10-11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions in Peter’s name to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, Centre College, or North Ottawa Hospice are appreciated.
