James Bowerman's Obituary
Jim was born and raised in Niles, Michigan and passed away peacefully in his Grand Haven, Michigan home. Throughout his years, and among his many adventures, he also called Spring Lake, Michigan, Iron River, Michigan and Midway, Arkansas home.
In 1969, he began his career of distinguished service with the US Army as a Cannoneer and Radio Operator during the Vietnam War where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, Vietnam Campaign with Device, Good Conduct Medal, Expert Rifle and a Purple Heart.
Following his military service, Jim combined his desire to serve with his love of hunting and fishing and embarked on the next phase of his career as a Conservation Officer with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Jim began his DNR career in Mio and Gladwin before serving 16 years in the Grand Haven/Holland area and later transferred to Western Iron County in the upper peninsula where he retired. During his 23 years of service Jim received numerous Letters of Accommodation and was highlighted in several newspaper articles for his investigative accomplishments all while protecting and preserving our natural resources.
After retirement, Jim followed his passions of hunting and fishing. Living out of his fifth-wheel for over 10 years, he traveled across the country, making frequent stops in Texas, Arizona, Arkansas and Montana and even traveled internationally in pursuit of the best fly fishing.
Jim made great friends everywhere he went. Having a small family himself, he considered his closest friends his family. He consistently provided them the same level of dedication and love that was displayed throughout his career. As a tribute to this, his 9-year-old “nephew” wanted to share the following; “Uncle Jim taught me how to fish. I love fishing now and it’s all because of him. I love my Uncle Jim.”
Jim will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herb and Audrey Bowerman.
Jim did not want a formal funeral service and simply requested that his ashes be spread in a trout stream. His life will be celebrated in a small ceremony on May 3rd at 2:00 PM at the American Legion Post 28 in Grand Haven, MI. For celebration information please email: audreyanne01@gmail.com.
