James Earl Cummings Sr.'s Obituary
James Earl Cummings, Sr., age 92, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at Trinity Health – Muskegon Campus. He was born September 11, 1931 in Magnolia, AR to Frank and Lossie (Sterling) Cummings and lived in the Muskegon area most of his life. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines. James married Viola Sanders on September 25, 1952 in Muskegon, MI and she preceded him in death on July 31, 2007. Prior to retirement in 1993, James worked over 20 years as a heavy equipment operator for Consumers Energy. He was a very active and longtime member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church where he served as an ordained deacon, sang in the choir and with the men’s chorus, and served on the executive board. He was an avid sports enthusiast, and his favorite team was the Boston Celtics. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing all kinds of card games. Survivors include his 3 children, Sandra (James) Brown, James Cummings, Jr., Pammy Cummings; 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 3 great great-grandchildren; his sister, Johnnie Hale; and special friend, Charlene Burr. He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola Cummings; 1 grandson; his parents; and 4 sisters. A Funeral Service will be held 12:00 PM Saturday, July 20, 2024 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church 2428 Ray Street, Muskegon Heights, MI 49444 with Pastor Jermaine Day officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Sunrise Memorial Gardens with Military Honors offered by the Muskegon Marine Corps League Detachment 703 and the United States Marine Funeral Detail.
