James F. de Spelder's Obituary
James Francis de Spelder, age 90, of Grand Haven passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014, at Heartwood Lodge. He was born April 4, 1924, in Grand Rapids to James E. and Frances (Becker) de Spelder. He was married to Angie Jean Resner of Grand Haven who preceded him in death in 1993.
Mr. de Spelder proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy/U.S. Marine Corps (medical corps) during World War II. He was a graduate of Hope College and earned his Master’s Degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He served as a hospital administrator in St. Ignace, Detroit, Rochester Hills, Marshall, and Ridgway, Pennsylvania. Mr. de Spelder was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, Educator, Entrepreneur and an involved member of St. Patrick - St. Anthony Catholic Church in Grand Haven where he had served as a Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of the American Legion where he had formerly served as head of the Honor Guard, Post Chaplain, and District Chaplain.
Survivors include three sons: Richard of Grand Haven, James (Therese) of Lansing, and Robert of Grand Rapids; and three grandchildren: James C, Joel, and Jeffrey de Spelder; and two sister-in-laws, Anne MacNeill of Grand Haven and Gynne (Jack) Bosch of Florida.
Friends may meet the family 6-9 p.m. Monday, June 2, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven. The service for Mr. de Spelder will be held at 11:00 a.m.. Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at St. Patrick - St. Anthony Catholic Church in Grand Haven with Rev. Fr. William Langlois presiding. A luncheon will be served following the ceremony. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Post #28 Honor Guard. Memorial contributions to American Legion Charles A.
