James Koert's Obituary
Mr. James Koert, age 72, of Spring Lake passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at home. He was born August 6, 1952, in Grand Rapids to James and Jeannette (Schripsema) Koert. James worked 35 years for General Motors before retiring.
James, known to all as Jim, had been a part of boat racing since the 1980’s and cherished his time on the water. Most recently he was working to obtain his captain’s license. For all who knew him, you also knew he enjoyed making wine. He was talented with all things construction and carpentry and was always willing to lend a helping hand on any project. Jim loved being with people. You could find him daily at one of his favorite restaurants or the home of one of his many friends and family members, sharing stories and good food with the people he cared about most.
He is survived by two children, son, Richard Koert, and daughter, Lindsey (Simon) Phelps; grandchild, Hananiah Phelps; brothers, Ed (Tammy) Koert, Tom (Brenda) Koert, and Robert Koert; 8 nieces and nephews and 21 great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Esther.
A celebration of life will be held later this summer. Details will be posted to his Facebook page. Memorial contributions in memory of James may be given to the Coast Guard Foundation in support of those who protect the waters he loved.
