James Levorn Massey's Obituary
James Levorn Massey Jr., age 56, passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2020 in Muskegon, Michigan. He was born on October 16, 1963 to James Levorn Massey Sr. and Mary Lee Massey in Muskegon, Michigan. James served his country in the US Army and later joined the US Navy before retiring. He was a Deacon of New Beginning Life Church in Muskegon under the leadership of Bishop Evonne Franklin. He enjoyed fishing, working on cars, playing dominos, he had a passion for cooking, and especially enjoyed time with his grandchildren. On October 17, 1998 he married, Doris Stephens and they spent 23 years together. Other survivors include daughter, Nicque’lya “Nikki” Massey; Sons, Ernest “Tyrone” Penigar, Johnny Penigar and Charles “C.J.” Stephens. James Levorn Massey’s tree of life consists of three (3) generations: Four (4) children, eight (8) grandchildren, and four (4) great grandchildren. He leaves to carry his legacy: His loving wife of 22 + years, Doris Massey; three sons, Tyrone Penigar (Muskegon, MI), Johnny (Tatiana) Penigar (Suffolk, Virginia), and Charles Stephens (Muskegon, MI). His only daughter, Nicque’lya Massey. Seven (7) sisters: Donna Gregory (Detroit, MI), Alice (Calvin) Frierson (Muskegon Heights, MI), Sharlene (Speregon) Evans (Southfield, MI), Darlene (Clarance) Jones (Muskegon, MI), Joyce (Jerry) Spencer-Mintz (Winston Salem, NC), Anette Massey (Muskegon, MI) and Christina Massey (Muskegon, MI) and a special nephew Tyshon Massey, along with a host of nieces and nephews. Half siblings, Merri (Eddie) Spencer, Marie Bradford, Tealace (Thaddeus) Bankhead, Dorthi Sims, Andrea Bradford, Nicole Bradford, Anita Bradford, Ida (Alvin) Jackson and Willie Bradford Dowdell. James was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents and special friend, Comrade Cubie Hendricks. A GRAVESIDE SERVICE with Military Rites is scheduled for James on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at Restlawn Cemetery (1400 Kenneth St.) with Pastor Robert Diggs.
