James "Jim" Milas' Obituary
Mr. James “Jim” Milas, age 83, of Spring Lake, passed away Thursday, October 11, 2018 at Mercy Hospital. He was born October 25, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois to Vincent and Adaleen (Walsh) Milas.
Jim was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the University of Chicago. He was a registered Civil and Mining Engineer and former business partner with the late Robert C. Bowen in Bowen and Milas, Inc. (underground contractors) and Muskegon Asphalt Paving Company (road building contractors). After retirement in 1989, he was employed as a consulting Civil Engineer on various constructions projects in Western Michigan. He served his country as an Officer in the United States Marine Corps and was a member of the American Legion. Active in community affairs, he was a member of the Grand Haven and Spring Lake Rotary Clubs, the Chamber of Commerce, the Spring Lake School Board, and most recently, a Trustee of the Grand Haven-Spring Lake Sewer Authority. He was a State and National Officer in various Engineering and Professional Associations.
On June 12, 1957 he married Rita Andreas in Chicago and she survives him along with five children: Jennifer (Russ Malek) Milas of Detroit, Ann (Matthew) Schmieder of Grand Rapids, James Milas, Jr. of Grand Haven, Rebecca (David) Hartt of Williamsburg, VA, Mary Chittenden of Spring Lake and; fifteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Milas.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Spring Lake. Visitation will be 4-7 PM Monday, October 15, 2018 at The VanZantwick Chapel (620 Washington Ave, Grand Haven). Interment will take place in Spring Lake Township Cemetery.
