James Darwin Sweezer DC's Obituary
James Darwin “Doc” Sweezer, DC, passed away Friday, March 21, 2025 at home surrounded by his loving family. Doc was born July 23, 1937 in Fort Madison, IA to James Dayton and Helen Virginia (Calvert) Sweezer. He moved to the Muskegon area 50 years ago when he began his private practice– All Chiropractic Health Services. On July 22, 1966, he married Elizabeth J. “Betty” Alexander in Chicago, IL and she survives him. Doc was a past president of the Muskegon Conservation Club where he kept his sailboat Antigua. He tried many different hobbies in life, including singing in a choir, piloting small engine aircraft, building clocks, and woodworking, but once he discovered sailing it became his true passion. He spent many enjoyable hours on Muskegon Lake and loved taking anyone who asked out on his boat. He taught his children and many other people how to sail, mentoring the next generation of sailors. In his earlier days, he worked as a hospital orderly where he met Betty, a nursing student, who became his wife and first mate of 58 years. As the patriarch of a family of 70, he will be especially be missed by his family and many dear friends. Survivors include his wife, Betty Sweezer; 6 children, Kimberly Dawn (Scott) Svoboda, Shannon Marie (Matt) Siuda, James Darwin Sweezer II, Dirk Douglas (Shannon) Sweezer, Jason Richard (Kelly) Sweezer, Katrina Ann (Mike) Alexander; 19 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren + 4 more arriving in 2025, 3 brothers, Dean Sweezer, Danny (Delores) Sweezer, Darrell (Linda) Sweezer; 1 sister, Denise Sweezer. He was preceded in death by his father, James Dayton Sweezer, his mother and stepfather, Helen and George Bohnenkamp; and his brother, David Sweezer. The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 26, 2025 at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 Harvey St, Norton Shores, MI 49444 with Deacon James J. Schiltz presiding. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Due to family members with asthma, please refrain from sending flowers.
