James Peter "Jim" Walwood's Obituary
James Peter “Jim” Walwood, age 90, of Grand Haven, Michigan, passed away on January 8, 2026.
The oldest of five children, Jim was born on September 2, 1935, in Grand Haven, Michigan to James A. and Clara Walwood.
Jim’s early career began with Challenge Porcelain, where his dedication to detail and strong work ethic led him into management. With the experience he gained there, he later joined Verplank Trucking Company, in a senior logistics role. His work at Verplank, became more than a job; Jim formed lasting friendships and remained with the company for the rest of his career.
Before beginning his professional life, Jim proudly served in the Army Honor Guard. While stationed in California, he explored the West Coast and once hitchhiked across the country back to Grand Haven.
An avid outdoorsman, Jim enjoyed deer hunting, snowmobiling, and golf, but his greatest passion was fishing. Whether facing rough seas on Lake Michigan or enjoying the calm of Inland Lakes, Jim could always be found with a fishing pole in hand. His love for the sport continued year-round; in winter, he augured holes through the ice to keep fishing. Jim also bowled with friends in a local bowling league, and also enjoyed spending time with family and friends playing cribbage, shooting pool, or throwing horseshoes.
Jim was always on the move. If he was not out enjoying the activities he loved, he was busy around the house. He believed in honest, hard work, and was always ready to lend a hand to others.
Jim is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Walwood; children: Timothy (Ronda) Walwood, Machelle (Christopher) Muir, and John (Patricia) Walwood; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Marie (Rebar) Walwood; his parents, James A. and Clara Walwood; his sisters, Sally (Vernon) Kline and Nancy (Michael) Vrablik; and brothers, Robert Walwood and William Walwood; two grandchildren; four nephews; and one niece.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at Robinson Township cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to The VanZantwick Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 620 Washington Ave., Grand Haven, MI 49417. Share memories with the family at their online guest book at https://www.sytsemafh.com
