Janice M. Gunansky's Obituary
Mrs. Janice M. Gunansky, age 83, went to be with our Lord on September 4, 2006. She was born on May 25, 1923 in Muskegon. Janice was a long time member of McGraft Memorial Congregational Church where she sang in the choir for 48 years, and served in the Mayflower Guild. She retired from Muskegon Public Schools where she worked as a secretary for 21 years. Active in the community, she was a Girl Scout leader, PTA president, and volunteered for the Red Cross and the West Shore Symphony. She was also a member of the MEA retired teachers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mabel Emlaw; her loving husband of 52 years, Robert Gunansky; and her only brother, Edmund Emlaw. She is survived by her two daughters, Ruth (Gunansky) Markham of Sandy, Utah, and Lynne (Gunansky) Karagoulis of Okemos, MI. Also surviving are her four grandchildren, John, Ellen, George, and Philip Karagoulis of Okemos; Janice’s niece and namesake, Janis Carvey of Muskegon, and her nephew, Thomas Emlaw of Grand Haven.
Janice was a graduate of Muskegon Senior High School class of 1941. Employment history also included Grossman’s Department store, Sealed Power, and Brunswick, where she met her husband, who claimed that she hit him over the head with a bowling pin and dragged him to the altar….She enjoyed golfing, bridge, sewing and was famous for her baking and especially for her pies.
In 2003, Janice moved to Okemos, MI to live with her younger daughter and her family, and was a cherished addition. As was her way, she settled in and made friends quickly. She attended church regularly and played bridge every Thursday at the Senior Center. Since May of 2006 she has resided at the Ingham County Medical Care Facility where she was attempting to recover from a fractured hip.
The Funeral Service will be held at McGraft Memorial Congregational Church at 11:00 AM Thursday, with the Rev. Dr. Gerald J. Wahr officiating. The family will receive friends at
