Jeffery Robert Beckeman's Obituary
Jeffery Robert Beckeman was born to Bob and Barb Beckeman on September 14, 1957, and passed away on March 8, 2026, after a courageous battle with ALS that lasted more than seven years. Throughout his illness, Jeff faced each day with determination, humor, and a commitment to helping others affected by the disease.
Jeff was a proud graduate of Whitehall High School, Class of 1975. He went on to attend Hope College, where he played baseball and developed a lifelong love for the school. Jeff was an enthusiastic supporter of Hope College athletics, as well as a devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions and the University of Michigan football program. Whether cheering from the stands or watching a game with friends, Jeff’s passion for sports was always accompanied by his quick wit and sense of humor.
Jeff treasured time with his friends, especially gathering to watch pool and enjoying the occasional trip to the casino. More than anything, Jeff loved his family. One of his favorite daily traditions was calling his mother each evening—a simple but meaningful routine that reflected his deep care and devotion.
During his battle with ALS, Jeff became an active participant in ALS support groups and research efforts. He was committed to advancing the search for a cure and willingly participated in clinical trials whenever possible, hoping his involvement might help others in the future.
Jeff was a longtime and faithful member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Whitehall, where he served as head usher for nearly 20 years. His dedication to the church community and his willingness to serve were appreciated by many.
Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Bob.
He leaves behind his loving mother, Barb (Marv) Ritsema; brother, Dan (Suzanne) Beckeman and his sister, Karyn Beckeman. Jeff also cherished his nieces and their spouses: Lindsay (Mike) Anderson, Justine (Chris) Tufts, Ashley (Matt) Hunt, Avona Beckeman and nephew Drew (Ashley) Beckeman. Jeff took great joy in their growing families, which include grand-niece Mara Anderson, grand-nephews Taylan Tufts, Liam Thomas, Hayes Anderson, Ford Beckeman, Nash Beckeman and Trapper Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Susan Mast Foundation in support of a cure for ALS.
