Jennie Catherine (Schaner) Steenhagen's Obituary
Mrs. Jennie Catherine (Schaner) Steenhagen, age 79, passed away Monday, October 25, 2010 at the Poppen Residence of Harbor Hospice. She was born August 20, 1931 to Jerome E. and Helen G. (Shinn) Schaner in Albuquerque, NM and lived in the Muskegon area since 1933. She married William A. Steenhagen on October 8, 1949 and he preceded her in death on January 22, 2005. She received her bachelor of education degree at age 43 from Western Michigan University. She then worked over 20 years as a teacher within Oceana County and Ocean County Head Start Program; co-owner and operator of Stoney Haven Camp Ground in New Era from 1971-1994. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Brunswick. She was a foster parent; volunteered for cub scouts and girl scouts and women’s auxiliary at the Fruitport Fire Department. She found great joy in teaching children and camping with her family and friends. She especially enjoyed having the grandchildren at “Camp Grandma”. SURVIVORS include 10 children, David (Sue) Steenhagen of Kent City, MI, Robert (Peggy) Steenhagen of Manton, MI, Thomas (Janeen) Steenhagen of Grand Ledge, MI, Catherine Ann Beeler of Coopersville, MI, James (Jackie) Steenhagen of Fruitport, MI, Connie (Jeff) McCoy of Muskegon, MI, Nancy (Robert) McLouth of Manton, MI, Daniel (Diane) Steenhagen of Cadillac, MI, Christine (Bruce) Norkoli of Cadillac, MI, Frank (Laura) Steenhagen of Souix City, IA; 28 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Jerome E. (Arlene) Schaner, Jr. of Walker, MI. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Phyllis Louise Steenhagen and her sister, Helen Louise DeNio. A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held 2:00 PM Friday, October 29, 2010 at The Lee Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey Street Norton Shores, MI 49444 (231) 798-1100 with Rev. Fr. Donn Tufts presiding. INTERMENT will take place at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery in Brunswick, MI. VISITATION with the family will be 2-4 and 6-8 PM Thursday and one hour prior to the service, 1-2 PM Friday at the funeral home. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS may be directed to the American Cancer Society or Poppen Residence of Harbor Hospice.
