Jerry Caviness' Obituary
Jerry Caviness, age 71, passed away Friday, December 11, 2020 at Mercy Hospital. He was born February 20, 1949 in Muskegon to Rev. Claude D. and Bernice (Mitchell) Caviness. Jerry accepted Christ at the age of 10 and accepted His calling to preach the Gospel. He attended Muskegon High School and was known as The Big Reds Indian Mascot. He also attended Bishop College until he was drafted into Military Service. Jerry was a proud member of the U.S. Air Force having served over 20 years. He later worked 18 years as a boiler and water treatment operator for Sappi Fine Paper before having to take a medical retirement. On July 4, 1978, he married Michelle A. Thomas in Abilene, TX and she survives him. Jerry was a member of New Mt. Zion Baptist Church (under the leadership of the late Rev. James E. Witcher) until his health prevented him from attending. He enjoyed the game of chess, watching television, and horse racing. Survivors include his wife, Michelle A. Caviness; 1 daughter, Nikkia Bowie; 3 grandchildren, Tristan, Juwan, and Jaiden Bowie; 1 brother, Bob (Ivory) Caviness; 1 sister, Selma Caviness; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, Rudolph, Charles, Claudie and Ronnie Caviness, and 1 sister, Beverly Sue Caviness. Public Visitation limited to 25 people at a time with social distancing will be held 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM Friday, December 18, 2020 at The Lee Chapel of Systema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 Harvey St, Norton Shores, MI 49444. A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held 12:30 PM Friday, December 18, 2020 at Norton Cemetery (743 Airport Rd, Norton Shores) with Elder Willie Williams, Jr. officiating and members of the Muskegon County Council of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Wright-Paterson Air Force Base providing honor detail.
