Jessie Grace Slater's Obituary
Mrs. Jessie Grace Slater, age 90, went to be with her Lord Tuesday afternoon, June 21, 2011 in Muskegon at her own home under the care of Hospice with her daughters, family and close friends at her side. She was born on November 1, 1920, to Peter Devries and Elizabeth Schuitema, the baby of nine siblings, and a life-long resident of Muskegon. She married LeRoy G. Slater on June 7, 1939, and together they raised eight children, all Big Red graduates. Jessie was an accomplished homemaker, who baked, canned, sewed, crocheted and knitted for her children and grandchildren. She was a very talented oral interpreter and was often asked to give readings for weddings, mother-daughter banquets, and other special occasions, including around the family dinner table. She was a beloved and treasured member of Calvary Baptist Church of Muskegon, now Calvary Church of Fruitport. She taught adult women’s Sunday School class, was a deaconess, and for many years cooked and served for church funerals and special events. Survivors include Rev. Dr. David (Constance ) Slater of Dover, NH, Joan (Fred) Sanderlin of Muskegon, Normajean (David Gunnar) Carlson of Muskegon, George (Pam) Slater of Live Oak, TX, Phyllis Slater (Ronald Paquette) of Muskegon, Clifford (Cheryl) Slater of Eagle River, WI, Sherri (Harry) Slater McCully of Muskegon, Elizabeth Slater-Adkins of Muskegon; 18 grandchildren, John David, Paul, Anna, Kierk, Josh, Raven, Jens, Stephen, Karen, Dustin, Wendy, Kim, Michael, Kathleen, Danny, John Rory, Autumn, William, and 25 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and her eight siblings. Service will be 1:00 pm Saturday, June 25 at Sytsema Funeral Home,737 Apple Avenue, 231 726 5210, with Pastor Bill Rudd & Rev.
