Sue, Norma and I send our deepest regrets. It was my honor to serve under John. There was no finer Coast Guard officer or man. The world is a poorer place for his leaving.
Respectfully,
Jim and Norma Collin
I knew him from the USCGC Duane, I was just a GM3 at the time, I didnt want to go to GM " C "school, but he told me to give it a try and I did, making it through the school. I was a couple years or so later, he pinned my E-6 collar devices on me when I made GM1. He made a significant difference in my life. Fair Winds XO,
CAPT Bastek was a wonderful CO (Northland) and loyal friend. When I was a young Coast Guard officer on Northland, he encouraged me to become an attorney and, several years later, I did. I have very fond memories of John- he was a true leader and made a huge difference in the type of officer and lawyer I became. I served 12 years in the Coast Guard and 14 years (as a JAG) in the Army Reserve, and I credit John with setting me on that path. Heartfelt condolences to Sue and his sons and grandchildren.

I just learned of John's passing. He was truly one of the the good guys and I will always cherish our time together at CCGD9. He was a trusted, valued mentor and shipmate!

As many of John's classmates have stated, John was a leader and example to us all. I remember John as an affable positive person who always was helpful and supportive. I'll never forget his love of life. I know you will carry on the enthusiasm and love of life that he shared with us all. Our hearts go out to you and your family.
