John R. Colella Sr.'s Obituary
John Robert Colella, Sr., age 92, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2025. He was born June 22, 1932, in Muskegon to Peter and Helen (Huxley) Colella. John was a proud U.S. Army Veteran and served his country during the Korean War. He worked 34 years as a pipefitter and welder before retiring in 1994 from the Scott Paper Company. On July 16, 1955, he married the former Shirley L. Toman in Muskegon, and she preceded him in death on October 14, 2007. John was a member of the Vikings Linne Lodge 57 for many years. He was an avid sportsman, including hunting, fishing, and golfing. John enjoyed going to casinos and buying scratch off lottery tickets. He was very sociable and loved having conversations with others. The staff at the Oasis of Norton Shores remembers John as being the one person that could brighten and bring a smile to everyone's day. But more importantly, John loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed. SURVIVORS include three children: John Robert (Sandy) Colella, Jr. of Muskegon, Sharon L. (Peter) Strazdas of Portage, MI, and Brian D. (Nancy) Colella of Muskegon; and seven grandchildren: Jason Colella, Shannon Strazdas, Michael (Nora) Strazdas, Kallerine Strazdas, Hunter (Rebecca) Colella, Chase (Megan Hannon) Colella, and Tanner Colella; one great-granddaughter, June Strazdas; many nieces and nephews; and his special lady friend, Maureen Guthrie. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Sam and Ben Colella; and a sister, Betty Sirianni. A Celebration of John’s Life will be held from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM on Friday, March 14, 2025 at the Vikings Linne Lodge 57, 3132 Lakeshore Dr., Muskegon, MI 49441 with Military Rites performed at 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Parkinson’s Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Association will be appreciated.
