John "Jack" W. Kastl's Obituary
Mr. John W. “Jack” Kastl, age 87, of Roosevelt Park passed away early Thursday, June 22, 2017, at the Poppen House with his family by his side. John was born on August 24, 1929, in Detroit, the youngest of three sons, to Arthur and Julia (Weldon) Kastl. The family moved to Midland County-Sanford Lake, when Jack was a boy. He graduated from Coleman High School in 1947. Jack enlisted in the Air Force in 1948 and served until 1952. Jack then joined the Heat and Frost Insulators Local 47 where he was a lifelong member of 55 years. On June 25, 1955, in Muskegon, Jack married Joan Schichtel. They had three children and settled in Roosevelt Park in 1963. Jack was the last original home owner on his block. Jack enjoyed dancing, traveling, wintering in Florida, eating out, and time with his family and friends. Jack is survived by his three children, Julie Kastl of Muskegon, Joe (Beth) Kastl of Twin Lake, and Jon (Mark Harbick) Kastl of New York City. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, LT. DR. Alex (Katie Trexler) Kastl USN of Camp Pendleton, and Emily Kastl of New York City; a brother-in-law, Joseph Schichtel; sisters-in-law, Elaine Kastl, Winnie Yost, and Barbara Schichtel, and his lady friend, Doris Kalinowski. He was “Uncle Jack” to his many treasured nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 49 ½ years, Joan; his parents; his brothers, Art and Ed; and many family members and friends. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be celebrated 11 AM Monday, June 26, 2017 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Charles Hall presiding. VISITATION with the family will be 4-7 PM Sunday at The Walburn Chapel, 1547 W. Sherman Blvd. (231) 759-8565. Entombment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
