Mr John Calvin Loss' Obituary
John C. Loss died peacefully on Sunday morning, September 18, 2016, in the loving arms of his wife LaMyrna. He was born on March 6, 1931 to Calvin and Dorothy (Demars) Loss. John was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, and was involved in the Knights of Columbus of Montague, MI. He received a degree in Architecture from U of M, and he served in the U.S. Army during the end of the Korean War. He then worked for Eero Saarinen in Bloomfield Hills, where he was involved with various aspects of all the firm’s projects during the two years he worked there, including the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, MI; Univ. of Chicago Law Library; IBM Manufacturing in Rochester, Minnesota; the TWA terminal; the American Embassy in London; and he helped design the St. Louis Arch. He then came back to Muskegon to study and work for DeVries, where he gained additional experience and passed the state board exams. While in Muskegon, he met and married his wife, LaMyrna. They then moved to Ann Arbor to earn his master’s degree in his field. He taught at U of M during his studies there. He was then invited to serve as Professor of Architecture at the Univ. of Detroit, also North Carolina St. Univ., and finally at the Univ. of Maryland, where he was Associate Dean and founded and directed the Architectural Research Center. Throughout this time, he continued amassing an extensive professional resume including the medical clinic for the Orthopedic Surgeons in North Carolina. He enjoyed sailing and being on the water, also listening to his LaMyrna play the piano. SURVIVORS include his wife, LaMyrna L. (Draggoo) Loss; siblings, Jean Jensen, Frances VanDyke, Ted (Lynn) Forward; many nieces and nephews; his special family, the Randy Lamoine’s; and his beloved students. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Lois Loss, Geraldine (Loss) Fox, Blossom VanderVelde, Lucille Knapp, “Jack” and “Cork” Forward, and Camille Coburn. A MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be held on Friday, September 23, 2016 at 10:30 AM, at St. Mary of The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 239 West Clay, Muskegon.
