John Muir Lynch's Obituary
John Muir Lynch, 82, of Muskegon, Michigan, passed away peacefully on October 30, surrounded by his family. Born in Dundee, Scotland, John attended Thurso Technical College, where he earned the Royal Institute of Chemistry’s annual award for Best Student in Scotland in 1964. A talented athlete as well, he played soccer for Heriot-Watt University and rugby for the Dounreay Rugby Club.
John came to the United States to build a career in the ink pigment industry, helping establish the Muskegon division of Sun Chemical. His leadership, work ethic, and expertise eventually took him around the world, but he always called Muskegon home, where he raised his family and built lifelong friendships.
John loved Michigan’s State Parks and spent much of his free time hiking trails, fishing west Michigan’s rivers, and golfing with family and friends. Known for his humor, integrity, and unmistakable Scottish accent, he brought life and laughter wherever he went. His signature phrases like “aww referee” or “good soccer!” were local favorites, as he coached his kids and many others in the community. His love for a good hike and good IPA was unmatched.
He is survived by his loving wife, Alison Lynch; four children: Janet (Terri) Weaver, Alistair Lynch, Fiona Lynch, and Andrew (Teresa) Lynch; nine grandchildren: Meghan Zimmerman and Eric Wiard, Ian Lynch and Kennedy Phillips, Duncan, Finnegan, and Rowan Lynch, and Parker and Cooper Lynch; sister, Alison Saul; brother, Robin (Trish) Lynch; and many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends who will remember his humor, warmth, and adventurous spirit. John was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Anne Lynch, and his twin brother, David (Helen) Lynch.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, from 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM at The Lake House Waterfront Grille in Muskegon, 730 Terrace Point Rd, Muskegon, MI, 49440.
