John H. McKendry Sr.'s Obituary
Mr. John H. McKendry, Sr., age 89, passed away Friday, May 23, 2014 at a local hospital. He was born April 13, 1925 in Ionia, MI to William and Esther (Cook) McKendry. John graduated high school at the Michigan School for the Deaf in Flint, MI. He married the former Lois Ruth Brandel in E. Grand Rapids, MI on June 17, 1949 and moved to Muskegon in 1953. Lois preceded him in death on December 15, 2007. John was employed as a Linotype Operator at the Muskegon Chronicle for 40 years until his retirement in 1991. He was past President of the Michigan Association of the Deaf and also, the Muskegon Chapter. He was an avid bowler and active with the Boy Scouts, Troop #53. He is survived by: 4 children, John H. (Linda) McKendry, Jr. of Norton Shores, Liz Ann Laskowski of Lockport, IL, Patricia S. (Fred) Garcia of Columbia, MO and William R. (Laureen) McKendry of Rockford, MI; 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Jeanne Hawley of Lake Odessa, MI and Joyce Moore of Lapeer, MI. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Robert and Thomas McKendry. The FUNERAL SERVICE will be held Thursday, 11:00 a.m., May 29, 2014 at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St., (231) 798-1100. VISITATION will be Wednesday, 3 – 5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. He will be laid to rest in Sunrise Memorial Gardens.
