He graduated from Grandville High School in 1948 and went on to proudly serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, earning a purple heart for being injured at the Battle of Old Baldy. On May 1, 1954, He married the former Delores Radke, and they spent 66 wonderful years together before she preceded him in death in 2021. John worked for some years at the Napsol Refinery in Muskegon, and then for 21 more as a machinist for Consumers Energy before retiring in 1992. John was a well-known fisherman; he was once referred to as “Mr. Perch” in the Muskegon Chronicle, and when other fishermen saw his red Lund fishing boat on the water they would often move their own boats to be closer to his. He was also a talented duck hunter, and he loved taking care of his lawn. He spent a lot of time fixing things over the years, especially fishing equipment that wasn’t working properly. He was an avid fan of Detroit Tigers Baseball, and he loved watching his grandsons playing sports for Muskegon Catholic Central and Reeths Puffer. More than anything, John loved to spend time with his family.
