John R. "Jack" Thompson's Obituary
Mr. John R. “Jack” Thompson, age 88, died Saturday morning, April 30, 2016 at his home. He was born February 24, 1928 in Muskegon to Milton and Fannie (DeVries) Thompson; and had been a life resident of the area. Following his graduation from high school, Jack served in the U.S. Navy for eight years; and was a veteran of both WWII and the Korean War. He then joined the Muskegon Heights Police Department, in 1953, as a Patrolman; and then becoming a Sergeant, Lt, Captain, Juvenile Officer, Probation Officer, Commander, and Chief of Police. Law Enforcement was more than a job; it was a way of life. Jack was respected by all; and was recognized in 1975 as Officer of the Year. In 1976, he graduated from the FBI Academy. While with the M.H.P.D., Jack was credited with modernizing the Department through participation in Central Dispatch, Central Narcotics and crime prevention. In addition to his busy career, Jack found time to serve on the Boards of Big Brothers, Alcoholism Council, Berean Church and taught Law Enforcement at Muskegon Community College. Following retirement, Jack enjoyed wintering in Florida and building doll houses. He was a member of Berean Church, VFW Post #3195 and Muskegon County F.O.P. Lodge #99. On March 20, 1948 he married the former Ruth Kooiman and she survives him along with his daughter, Jackie (Jim) Toppen; 2 grandchildren, Brian (Angela) Toppen and Kristin (Chris) VanSolkema; 4 great-grandchildren, Gavin, Maya and Bryson VanSolkema and Hunter Toppen. In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his son Johnny Thompson and brother, Donald Thompson. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Berean Church, 635 Seminole Rd, Norton Shores, MI 49441, with the Rev. Dr. Rob Renberg officiating. VISITATION with Jack’s family will be 5-8:00 PM Tuesday at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St., Norton Shores, MI 49444 (231-798-1100).
