John Varela's Obituary
Mr. John Varela, age 89, passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at his home. He was born August 21, 1921 to Martin and Juanita (Martinez) Varela and lived in Florida before moving to Muskegon. Mr. Varela worked as a tool and dye maker in the automotive industry for many years. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. SURVIVORS include 1 daughter, Debby Guzman of Muskegon; 4 grandchildren, Alesha Cabrera, Andrea (Kenneth) Cabrera-Council, Augustin Cabrera, Jr., and Mario Cabrera; 5 great-grandchildren; and 1 sister, Margarita (Fred) Marquez of Saginaw, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Bartolo Varela, Joseph Varela, Leopoldus Varela, Sr., and 7 sisters, Infant Dolores, Ascension, Alicia, Mary, Dora, Delores, and Rita. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be held 1:00 PM Monday, January 10, 2011 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Matthew J. Barnum as celebrant. INTERMENT will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. VISITATION with the family will be 2-4 and 6-8 PM Sunday where the Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 PM at The Sytsema Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 737 Apple Avenue (231) 726-5210. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the Mass, 12-1 PM Monday at the church. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS may be directed to Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church Memorial Fund or the American Cancer Society.
