John E. Medema, Sr.'s Obituary
Mr. John E. Medema, Sr. went to be with his Lord Tuesday, July 20, 2004 in Muskegon. He was born March 22, 1919 to Jacob and Henrietta (Wierenga) Medema in Muskegon and was a life resident. Mr. Medema was in the United States Army and fought in WWII. After serving in the Army, John worked 25 years at the Muskegon Post Office as a letter carrier before retiring in 1981, and had served as the manager of the Celery Growers Co-Op. Mr. Medema was an active member of Allen Avenue CRC where he served as elder, deacon, and cadet counselor. He was the former head of band parents for Western Michigan Christian High School and organized all the travelogs. John loved to golf. On May 29, 1947, in Muskegon, he married the former Gladys J. Middlecamp, and she preceded him in death along with his parents; 1 brother, Frederick; and 1 sister, Henrietta. He is survived by 2 sons, John E. (Rhonda) Medema, Jr. of Rothbury, Michael J. (Paulette) Medema of Muskegon; 1 daughter, Judith A. (Richard) Archambault of Baltimore, MD; 2 grandchildren, John M. Archambault, Nicolette Rae (Greg) Carpenter; 3 step-grandchildren, Nicholas Cummins, Melissa (Carol) Lorenz-Rippley, and Brandon (Angie) Lorenz; 2 great-grandchildren, Tyler Carpenter and Zander Lorenz-Rippley, 2 brothers, Donald (Joan) Medema of Grandville, Robert Medema of Montague; 1 sister, Gladys Olthof of Spring Lake; several nieces and nephews. SERVICES will be 1:00PM Saturday at Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc., 737 Apple Ave., 231-726-5210 with Rev. Robert Bierenga officiating. Visitation with the family will be Friday, 2-4PM and 6-8PM at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Restlawn Cemetery. Memorials can be made in Mr. Medema’s name to Hospice of Muskegon-Oceana or to Western Michigan Christian High School Band Parents.
