John H. Spencer's Obituary
John H. Spencer, age 74, of Grand Haven passed away Monday, February 18, 2008, at his home. He was born August 26, 1933, in Rogers City, MI, and he married the former Phyllis Scram on July 26, 1956, in Spring Lake.
Mr. Spencer was a lifelong resident of Grand Haven and was formerly employed as a press operator for Oldberg’s Manufacturing. He later worked for My Auto Import Center delivering cars and trucks. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a Lions Club member since August 17, 1982. He was currently a member of the Grandville-Jenison Lions Club. His membership and involvement with the Lions Club was an important part of his life, and he received numerous awards for his dedicated service.
Survivors include his loving wife, Phyllis; two daughters, Sue Spencer of Norton Shores and Kimberly Hudson of Grand Haven; three sons: John Henry (Debbie) Spencer, Jr. of Nunica, Allen D. (Linda) Spencer and Rex L. (Xarisa) Spencer, both of St. Paul, Minnesota; fourteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Collins of Grand Haven; and a brother, Charles (Judy) Florip of North Muskegon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Florip and Elizabeth Spencer; a son, Thomas LeRoy Spencer in 1964; and two brothers, Clarence and Leonard Florip.
The service for John will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 21, 2008, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven with Pastor Gary Lacy officiating. Friends may meet the family 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, February 19, and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, February 20, at the funeral home in Grand Haven. Interment will be in Lakeshore Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post #28 Honor Guard. Memorial contributions in John’s name may be made to Harbor Hospice or to the Grandville-Jenison Lions Club.
