John N. Malda's Obituary
Mr. John N. Malda, age 89, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday morning, September 14, 2010, from the Poppen Residence. He was born February 15, 1921 in Rothbury, MI to Joe and Jennie (Wybenga) Malda and had resided in the Muskegon area since 1939. John was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II; and was the owner and proprietor of Malda’s Barbershop for 42 years, prior to his retirement in 1989. He was an active member of First Christian Reformed Church where he had served as a Deacon, Elder, Sunday School teacher and member of its Men’s Society. John had also previously served on the Board of Muskegon Christian School, the former United Evangelism Association and volunteered at the church, school and Habitat for Humanity. Following his retirement John worked five years at Love, Inc. as manager of the furniture and appliance warehouse. He also found time to serve as President of the Muskegon Shuffleboard Club for 4 years. On December 5, 1947 he married the former Dena VanAndel and she survives him along with his daughter, Joan (Michael) Stob of Grand Rapids, MI; daughter-in-law, Karen Malda of McHenry, IL; 1 granddaughter, Rebecca (Eric) Stob; 6 grandsons, Joel Stob, Jacob (fiancée Traci) Malda, CPT Jonathan Malda, USAF, Joshua Malda, Jason Malda and Jared Malda; 2 great-granddaughters; 2 great-grandsons; 2 brothers, William of Muskegon and Ben of Rothbury; 2 sisters, Betty (Willard) Hewitt of Muskegon and Helen Malda of New Era; his in-laws, Margaret Rop, Phyllis VanAndel and Henry (Patricia) VanAndel. He was preceded in death by his son, John William “Bill” Malda on January 21, 2007, and by 2 sisters-in-law, Ruth and Connie Malda; and 3 brothers-in-law, James Rop, Nicholas and James VanAndel. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held 11AM Friday, September 17, 2010, at First Christian Reformed Church (1450 Catherine Ave.) with Pastor Mike Borgert officiating. Burial will be in Restlawn Cemetery. VISITATION with John’s family will be 2-4 & 6-8PM Thursday at The Sytsema Chapel of Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc., 737 Apple Avenue, Muskegon, MI 49442 (231-726-5210).
