John P. Schnell's Obituary
Mr. John "Jack" P. Schnell, age 80, of West Olive passed away Friday, April 29, 2011 at home. He was born January 8, 1931 in Grand Rapids to Phillip and Ruth Shepard Schnell.
Jack was a graduate of the University of Michigan and served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He spent his career as an architect with various firms in Michigan including Ayres, Lewis, Norris and May of Ann Arbor; Vandermeiden, Koteles & Associates of Grand Haven and WBDC of Grand Rapids. For many years he was active as a member and then chairman of the Grand Haven Township Planning Commission. He loved woodworking and was a member of West Michigan Wood Turners. He was an avid reader and enjoyed classical music, photography, fishing, and grilling the fish afterward, but most of all he loved to spend time with his family.
On December 29, 1956 he married Margery Milks in Lansing and she survives him along with 3 children, Mark (Karen) Schnell of North Carolina, Janet (Jon) Koch of Central Lake, MI, Phillip (Robin) Schnell of California; and 4 grandchildren, Samantha, Lee, Adin and Caleb.
A Memorial Service for Jack will be 11:00 AM Saturday, May 14, 2011 at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven with Rev. Larry Dannemiller officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 1 hour prior to the service. Interment will take place in Historic Cemetery in Grand Haven Township. Memorials in honor of Jack may be given to the American Cancer Society or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Please sign the family’s online guest book at www.vbkfuneralhome.com.
