John Robert "Bob" Achterhoff, Jr.'s Obituary
Mr. John Robert Achterhoff Jr. passed away very unexpectedly Saturday evening, November 13, 2010. John was born November 30, 1942 to John Robert and Ruth (Kammen) Achterhoff, Sr. John attended Muskegon Jr. High Schools and Western Michigan Christian High School before joining the Army National Guard as a supply sergeant. He worked for Quality Beverage Canada Dry and drove delivery truck; sometimes all the way up to Idelwild. John attended Florida Atlantic University where he studied real estate and business. John took over his father’s real estate business office in Muskegon after his father’s death in 1966 and his mother, Ruth, continued on as his receptionist as she had for her husband. John married Gisela E. Schloemp in 1972 and they have 2 children, Barbara (Shannon) Gimenes and John R. (Cindy) Achterhoff III. Throughout his business career, John kept himself very busy with an endless array of committees, boards and clubs. He served on the Whitehall Board of Education and has been a member of AMBUCS for many, many years serving as member, vice president, president, past president and past district governor. John also was an active member of RPAC as well as past president. He also owned and maintained Glenside Gardens Apartments through the real estate office since they were established by his father in 1949-1950. John was Fruitland Township Building Inspector, planning commission chairman, past president of the Muskegon Conservation Club and served on the County Board of Realtors. He was past MAR director and volunteered for the Muskegon Air Fair for 15 years. John had a love for boating and fishing, found much enjoyment in helping people through his real estate office and he especially loved his family. Surviving him is his loving wife of 38 years, Gisela; daughter, Barbara (Shannon) Gimenes; son, John R. (Cindy) Achterhoff III; grandsons, Logan and Jase Gimenes; father-in-law, Siegfried Schloemp; sisters, Susan (Marv) VanderWeg and Mary Jane Achterhoff –Lint; 3 nephews, 1 niece and many cousins. A FUNERAL SERVICE will be 11 AM Thursday, November 18, 2010 at Bethany Christian Reformed Church with Rev. David Sieplinga officiating. VISITATION with John’s family will be held on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 from 2-4 & 6-8 at The Lee Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey Street(231) 798-1100. Memorial contributions may be made to AMBUCS or Sportsmen for Youth. Burial will take place in Fruitland Township Cemetery with Full Military Rites under the auspices of VFW Muskegon County Council.
