Mr. Joseph G. Alderink's Obituary
Mr. Joseph G. Alderink, 88, passed away Sunday, February 4, 2024, at his home in Muskegon. He was born October 2, 1935, to Gerrit and Loretta (Gallagher) Alderink in Muskegon and was a lifelong resident. Joe was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. He took over his father’s business, Alderink Plastering in 1966; impressing his trade onto many members of his family that have carried on his craft in Muskegon. He was an avid outdoorsman, spending much of his free time at his cabin up north hunting and fishing with his family. When he was home, he tended to his legendary garden that everyone he knew came to enjoy and benefit from. He had a knack for making homemade wine and always made sure to ask if you would like to share a glass. Watching sports, especially the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings was a staple in his life. On August 7, 1954, Joe married the love of his life Arlene Maynard, and she preceded him in death on March 16, 2008. Survivors include ten children: Thomas (Debbie) Alderink, Sue (Gary) Tindall, Jim (Jean) Alderink, Shelly (Mike) Yonker, Larry (Kristi) Alderink, Denise (Tony) Daves, Terise (Bruce) Middlecamp, Chris (David Vanderlaan) Dowker, Joe (Corinne Hallowell) Alderink, Jr., Mindy (Jon) Prause; 24 grandchildren 26 great grandchildren; one sister, Patsy Woodring. He was also preceded in death by his parents, and siblings: MaryEllen Lee, Eugene Alderink, Kathleen Mckissack and Evelyn Smith. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, February 9, at 11:00 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Visitation at The Sytsema Chapel of Sytsema Funeral and Cremation Services, 737 E. Apple Ave., Muskegon, MI 49442, will be Thursday, February 8, from 5-8 PM, with the Rosary prayed at 7:30 PM. Visitation will also be from 10:00 – 11:00 AM Friday prior to the Mass. Burial will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Mr. Alderink may be made to the Muskegon Rescue Mission.
