Joyce Marie Berns' Obituary
Joyce Marie Berns, age 84, of Spring Lake passed away Friday, August 28, 2020, at North Ottawa Community Hospital. She was born August 26, 1936, in Detroit, MI to Howard and Ellen (Flynn) Vincent and married William “Bill” Berns on August 6, 1959, in Rochester, MI.
Joyce’s childhood helped to build a heart that was resilient and centered around family. Her sixty-one-year marriage to Bill demonstrated how hard work and kindness can create a fulfilling life. Their favorite memories together were traveling the Great Lakes on their boat, the “Joy-Sea.” Her love was often expressed in the kitchen by feeding her family, friends and the community. She has passed on many memories and recipes to her beloved grandchildren. Faith helped to guide her into a life of service. There was rarely a church function or volunteer opportunity that Joyce said “no” to. She graciously led the Women’s Club of St. Mary’s Church for many years. Joyce will be missed for her infectious smile and incredibly caring heart.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, William “Bill” Berns; daughter, Linda (Michael) Bouman; two sons, Richard (Lisa) Berns and William Steven Berns; eight grandchildren: James Berns, Meghan Bouman, Allison Berns, John Berns, Sara Berns, Lea Berns, Lauren Berns and Susan Berns; and her sister, Katherine “Katy” (Tom) Burch. She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Marie Louise Berns, two brothers, Howard and James Vincent, and grandson, Jacob Bouman.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 23, 2021, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Leonard Sudlik as celebrant. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the mass at church. For those wishing to make an expression of sympathy, please consider donations to Hospice of North Ottawa Community. Arrangements entrusted to The Spring Lake Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 213 E. Savidge St, Spring Lake, MI 49456.
