I didn’t know Karen well outside of work, but my first memory of her has stayed with me.

I was fairly new to OAISD and my position as HR Specialist. I met with her about an error that had been made with her benefits, and I was incredibly nervous. I came into this role by chance, and at the time, I felt completely out of place—like I didn’t belong in this group of educated, experienced professionals. Coming from a low-income, uneducated background, having worked my way up from the factory floor into the corporate world, I often felt overwhelmed and unsure if I could make it. Truthfully, there were days I wanted to quit.

But then I met Karen. She was kind and down-to-earth, so much so that in a moment when I was supposed to reassure her about our mistake, she was the one who reassured me. She was full of grace and understanding; that small moment of kindness meant the world to me.

It showed the kind of person she truly was—a heart full of compassion, patience, and generosity.

Her passing deeply saddens me, but I’m grateful to have known her, even if only for a short while. May she rest in peace.

There are so many memories I am not sure I can come up with one. What I can share is the love, laughs and always being welcomed at the Fischer home. A home and atmosphere created by Karen and Roy. A shared meal, shared conversations and many laughs. No matter who you were/are always welcome. Thank you Karen for always being a faithful friend thru up’s and downs. I will truly miss you.
