Sgt. Larain "Larry" D. Houghtaling US Army (Ret.)'s Obituary
Sgt. Larain “Larry” D. Houghtaling (Ret.), age 69, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at his home. He was born February 25, 1944 in Hart, MI to Albert and Ina (Patana) Houghtaling and lived most of his life in the Muskegon area. Sgt. Houghtaling served over 25 years in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. Following his time in the Army, Larry worked over 25 years as a machinist in the Muskegon area for Dresser Industries, Grand Haven Steel and he retired in 2008 from C.W. Marsh Company. On October 11, 1963, he married the former Suzan K. Williams in Muskegon and she survives him. Larry was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. He was also a proud member of the VFW Post #7729 and formerly the Muskegon Heights Eagles. Larry enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and a good card game of cribbage or pinnacle. His favorite sports team was the Detroit Tigers and he rarely missed watching the games on TV. Larry also enjoyed playing “scratch-off” lottery games. SURVIVORS include his wife of 50 years, Suzan; 2 children, Chris A. Houghtaling of Grand Haven, Cheryl A. (Daryl) Carrier assigned to Sembach, Germany; 6 grandchildren, Klintworth (Ashley) Erks, Katarina Carrier, Kohl Houghtaling, Daniel Carrier, Danielle Carrier, Kollin Houghtaling; 2 great-grandchildren, Emily Larain Burch, Camerin James Schottenbauer; 1 brother, George (Marne) Houghtaling; 1 sister, Shirley (Jack) Harter; 2 brothers-in-law, David Williams, Donald (Debra) Williams; 2 sisters-in-law, Patricia Houghtaling, Sandra (Donald) Gatfield; and 2 very close friends, Dave Arnold and Jay Long. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, Doris Henderson, Joan Moore, Selena Houghtaling; and 1 brother, Loran Houghtaling. A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held 11:00 AM Monday, February 3, 2014 at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey Street, (231) 798-1100, with Rev. Robert J. Conradt officiating and Military Honors offered by the Army National Guard and the Honor Guard of VFW Post #7729. INTERMENT will take place at Egelston Township Cemetery. VISITATION will be 2-4 and 6-8 PM Sunday and one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
