Laura Eva Zimmerman's Obituary
Laura Eva Ryder Zimmerman was born December 9, 1917 in Grand Haven, Michigan, the daughter of Oren Leroy and Anna Catharina Dorothea (Wuennecke) Ryder. Laura was Baptized into the Christian faith as a child at United Methodist Church in Grand Haven, and was Confirmed in the Christian faith at St. John Lutheran Church in Grand Haven. On November 4, 1939 Laura was united in marriage with Edward August Zimmerman in Grand Haven. Edward preceded Laura to eternal life on May 17, 1986.
Laura was a lifelong resident of the Grand Haven area and was employed in the school libraries of the Grand Haven School District for many years. After her retirement, Laura volunteered her time and abilities to the Tri-Cities Museum, North Ottawa Community Hospital and the Loutit Library. Laura served St. John Lutheran Church as a Sunday School teacher for 27 years, as a member of the Women’s Guild, and in St. John’s early Scouting Program.
Laura fell asleep in Jesus from the Harbor Hospice Poppen Residence, Fruitport, MI early Monday morning, September 13, 2010. Laura received eternal life at the age of 92 years, 9 months and 4 days. Services of Christian Burial were conducted on Tuesday, September 14, 2010; a family service of Christian Remembrance was conducted on Wednesday, September 15 with Rev. Dieter Haupt of St. John Lutheran Church, Grand Haven, officiating. Interment is in Lake Forest Cemetery in Grand Haven.
Those who mourn Laura’s death include her sons, Rev. Mark and wife Jeanne of Norton Shores, and Charles of Ann Arbor, Michigan; close friend and former daughter-in-law, Lannie Zimmerman of Grand Haven; grandchildren Mark and wife Dr. Sarah Zimmerman of Spring Lake, Michigan, Anne and husband Aaron Velthouse of New York City and Brent and Carly Zimmerman of Grand Haven; great-grandchildren Bethany and Benjamin Zimmerman of Spring Lake; special friends Virginia Zimmerman of Spring Lake and Fern Mastenbrook of Grand Haven; cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. Laura was preceded to eternal life by two brothers, Bill and Jim; and four sisters, Lucy, Della, Clara and Mabel.
Laura has requested that memorial considerations be directed to the General Operating Funds of St. John Lutheran Church, Grand Haven or St. Mark Lutheran Church, Norton Shores.
