Lawrence R. Taylor's Obituary
Mr. Lawrence R. Taylor, age 87, died Wednesday evening, July 22, 2009 at his home. He was born August 5, 1921 in Escanaba, MI to Albert & Anna (Hurkmans) Taylor and has resided in the Muskegon area since 1945. Larry was a WWII, U.S. Army veteran of the 823rd Tank Destroyer Battalion. He was an active member of St. Mary’s of the Woods Catholic Church where he was a former usher, groundskeeper, maintenance provider and festival volunteer. Larry was a 37 year employee of Teledyne Continental Motors, prior to his retirement in 1977. Following his retirement, Larry became an active member of the Holton American Legion Post and of Johnson Hall Senior Citizens, where he served as its President over 15 years. He also enjoyed being a “Bingo Caller” at the Legion and Johnson Hall. On March 26, 1946 he married the former Delphine LaPorte and she preceded him in death on September 29, 2008. He was also preceded in death by his son, Clayton Spars. SURVIVORS include 1 son, Ronald (Bonnie) Taylor of Muskegon; his daughter-in-law, Theresa Spars of Muskegon, 5 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Albert (Judy) Taylor of Escanaba, MI and Francis (Nancy) Taylor of Elkhart, IN; special friend, Jayne Taylor ; several nieces and nephews, among whom is his nephew Bob (Dawn) Tupper of Roscommon and by his dog and constant companion, Brie. The MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be held 11 AM Monday, July 27, 2009 at St. Mary’s of the Woods Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Donn P. Tufts presiding. Burial will be in Twin Lake Cemetery. VISITATION with Larry’s family will be 2-4 & 6-8 PM Sunday at The Sytsema Chapel of Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc., 737 Apple Avenue, Muskegon, MI 49442 (231-726-5210)
