Leo B. Shafer's Obituary
Mr. Leo B. Shafer, age 82, passed away Sunday evening, September 26 at a local hospital. He was born June 3, 1922 to Mark E. and Lizzie (Strayer) Shafer in Oceana Co. and has been a resident of Muskegon since 1929. Mr. Shafer was a veteran of WWII and received a Bronze Star medal for capturing 30 Germans single-handedly. He had worked at Muskegon Piston Ring for 34 years before retiring in 1976. Leo was a member of the American Legion of Hesperia #911, Muskegon Moose #491, #3195 VFW of Norton Shores, and the Muskegon Heights Eagles #2106. On October 31, 1942, he married the former Betty J. Benson and she survives him along with 1 son, Ronald Shafer of Muskegon; 2 daughters, Carol (Jerry) Wood, Marlene Leiter both of Muskegon; 6 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Wilma (Harold) VanderWahl of California, and many special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 sister, Sylvia Pastor. A Memorial Service will be held 2PM Wednesday at Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc., 737 Apple Ave., 231-726-5210, with Pastor Gail Brown officiating. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service. Memorials in Mr. Shafer’s name can be made to Hackley Visiting Nurses Hospice.
