Leon Chittenden's Obituary
Leon Chittenden, age 93, of Frankfort, formerly of Spring Lake, passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2017, at The Maples in Frankfort, Michigan. He was born November 10, 1924, in Spring Lake to George D. and Gladys (Viebrock) Chittenden, and he married Mildred Vink on September 10, 1948. Mildred preceded him in death on April 24, 1987. Leon then married Mary Timmerman on July 11, 1992, at Spring Lake Presbyterian Church.
Leon served his country in the Army during WWII. He then went to Michigan State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree, and worked as a school teacher for Mona Shores Elementary Schools for over thirty years. Leon was a member of Spring Lake Presbyterian Church, Lions Club, Charles A. Conklin American Legion Post # 28, and the Sgt. Alvin Jonker V.F.W. Post # 2326 in Grand Haven. His other interests were golf, fishing, gardening, and dancing.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Mary Chittenden of Frankfort; daughter, Julia (Mike) Jones of Stuart, Florida; son Todd (Nancy) Chittenden of Crete, Illinois; six grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; his sister, Alice Shumake of Spring Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Claudia Chittenden, and six brothers and sisters.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 16, 2017, at Spring Lake Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dan Anderson officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Charles A. Conklin American Legion Post # 28 of Grand Haven Honor Guard. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service at church.
