Leonard Nicholas Schregardus' Obituary
Mr. Leonard Nicholas Schregardus, age 87, passed away Thursday, February 4, 2010 at the Poppen Residence. Leonard was born April 3, 1922 to Nicholas and Jennie (Rosendahl) Schregardus in Holland, MI. Len served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army in the Philippines during WWII. On August 11, 1950 Leonard married the former Shirley Wierda and she survives him. Leonard graduated from Holland High School, then attended Davenport College, the University of Grand Rapids (Aquinas), the Citadel, Hope College, N.Y.U. at Buffalo, Northern Michigan University and Michigan State University, respectively. He earned a Masters (+30) in Mathematics (Buffalo) and Education (Michigan State). Len taught school at Muskegon Hts. High School from 1949-1968 (becoming assistant principal); he then taught at Mona Shores School High School, retiring in 1985. Mr. Schregardus also taught classes at Muskegon Community and Baker Colleges. Leonard was a long-time member of Covenant Community Church where he served as a youth group leader, Elder, Deacon, Treasurer, Clerk, and Sunday School supervisor. Nick enjoyed golf and tennis for many years of his life and bowled on the Red Triangle League. Above all, Leonard loved the Lord and his family. In addition to Shirley, his wife of 59 years, he is survived by 3 daughters: Kathy (Russ) Smiley of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Karen (Stephen) Bruining of Spring Lake, MI, and Barbara (Jeff) Griffith of Charlotte, NC; 7 grandchildren: Katie (Ben) Smiley-Enloe and Kristen (Bryan) Diviney, Stephanie and Patrick Bruining, Hayley, Payton and Gaelin Griffith; great-grandson, Parker Enloe; sister, Lucille Doorn of Grand Rapids, MI; He was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Schregardus and a sister, Nellie Joostberns. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, February 6, 2010 at Covenant Community Church (134 E. Barney, Muskegon Hts.) with Pastor Mark Bush officiating. VISITATION will be Friday from 6-9 PM at The Walburn Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc 1547 W. Sherman Blvd. 231-759-8565 and one hour prior (1-2PM) to the service at the church. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS may be made to Covenant Community Church or Harbor Hospice.
