LeRoy G. Slater's Obituary
Mr. LeRoy G. Slater, age 89, went to be with his Lord Monday morning, October 10, 2005 in Muskegon. He was born April 18, 1916 to Stephen and Permilla (Griffin) Slater in Grayling, MI, and lived in the Muskegon area for most of his life. He worked as an electrician for Montgomery Elevator for over 25 years before retiring. Mr. Slater was a member of Calvary Church, where he taught Sunday school for over 50 years, was a Deacon, and was involved with the Bus Ministry of the church. He enjoyed playing the saxophone and used it in his Nursing Home Musical Ministry for over 25 years, and the Jail Ministry. Mr. Slater loved playing tennis, swimming, diving, and ice skating, and taught all of his children to enjoy these activities also. On June 7, 1939 he married the former Jessie Grace DeVries. SURVIVORS include his wife Jessie of Muskegon; 8 children, Rev. Dr. David (Constance) Slater of Dover, NH, Joan (Fred) Sanderlin of Muskegon, Normajean (David Gunnar) Carlson of Muskegon, George (Pam) Slater of Live Oak, TX, Phyllis Slater (Ronald Paquette) of Muskegon, Clifford (Cheryl) Slater of Eagle River, WI, Sherri (Harry) Slater-McCully of Muskegon, Elizabeth (Rory) Adkins of Hiawassee, GA; 18 grandchildren, John David, Paul, Anna, Kierk, Josh, Raven, Jens, Stephen, Karen, Dustin, Wendy, Kim, Michael, Kathleen, Danny, John Rory, Autumn, and William; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Bernice; and 2 uncles. SERVICES will be 1:00 PM Thursday at Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc.,737 Apple Ave.,(231) 726-5210 with Pastor Bill Rudd officiating. Burial will take place at Restlawn Cemetery. VISITATION will be from 2-4 & 6-8 PM Wednesday. Memorials: Calvary Church Building Fund.
