Mamie Z. "Susie" Mudgett's Obituary
Mamie Zepharine “Susie” Mudgett passed away on November 6, 2022 in Ravenna, Michigan. Susie was born in Folkston, Georgia to James Howard Huling, Sr. and Winnie Lee (nee China) Huling. Her family moved from Georgia to Jacksonville, Florida when she was in Junior High. She graduated from Paxton High School in Jacksonville, Florida in 1956. While working at a local bank to earn money for nursing school, a high school friend introduced her to Lyle Mudgett who would become her husband of 57 years. After Lyle was discharged from the Marines, they moved to his hometown of Ravenna, Michigan. Susie was a beloved grandmother, mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend. She was hostess to many family holidays and at Christmas time she always had the most beautiful Christmas trees. When her children were in school, she volunteered with the local Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops. She enjoyed travelling with her husband and family. They took several trips around the country, a few trips to Europe, and a cruise to the Panama Canal. She was famous for her fudge sprinkled with pecans on top which was sold at many a school fund raiser. She was active in the Order of the Eastern Stars for over 60 years and was a Life Member of Grand Haven-Spring Lake Chapter #132. She was initially initiated in Loyal Chapter #358 in Ravenna. Through the years she held several offices, including serving as Worthy Matron several times and her favorite station was Martha. She also participated in Grand Chapter activities where she served as a Grand Committee Woman. Susie is survived by her four children Sharon Mudgett of Midland, Joni (Jim) Wagner of Ravenna, Donald Mudgett of Duluth, Georgia, and Scott Mudgett of Grand Rapids, Michigan; three Grandchildren Rachel (Ryan) Woods, Matthew Mudgett, and Hannah Mudgett; and Great Grandson Ezra Woods. They along with dear friends and neighbors will miss her very much. Susie was predeceased by her husband Lyle, her parents, and two brothers James Howard Huling, Jr. and Robert Lee Huling; daughter-in-law, Patricia Dailey Mudgett; and infant daughter Sue Ellen Mudgett. Memorials may be directed to the Beechnau Thieme Memorial Fund or the Ravenna Area Fire Department. Services will be held at The Ravenna Chapel of Sytsema Funeral and Cremation Services on Saturday, November 12, 2022. The Order of Eastern Star will conduct a Memorial Service at 1:30 PM, followed by a Memorial Gathering from 2 – 4 PM. Burial will take place following the Memorial Gathering at the Ravenna Township Cemetery.
